Specializing in the history of numismatic literature, he focuses his research on Italian publications from the sixteenth century onward, with the aim of critically reconstructing the stages through which the science of coins took shape within the national cultural landscape.
This work, carried out with systematic method, has brought to light forgotten or previously underappreciated contributions, restoring visibility to works published between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries that are essential to understanding the evolution of the discipline. The results of his research have been regularly presented at national and international scholarly conferences.
Particular attention is devoted to the study of manuscripts, correspondences between scholars, and documents preserved in public and private archives. The letters, often accompanied by coin drawings, bibliographic notes, critical judgments, and personal reflections, offer a vivid and tangible perspective on the formation of numismatic knowledge and on the dynamics, sometimes marked by rivalry or mutual esteem, that fostered its circulation.
These sources are invaluable not only for reconstructing the intellectual networks that inspired numismatic debate over the centuries, but also for restoring human and historical depth to a discipline too often reduced to a purely technical enumeration. In this sense, attention to archival materials takes the form of a true “antiquarian philology”, capable of capturing the development of numismatic science in its most authentic dimension.
Alongside this main research focus, he also investigates the coinage of mints in southern Italy and Sicily from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century, with particular regard to historical and institutional aspects and the actual circulation of coins. He has also explored the coinage of the Kingdom of Italy and Bourbon medallic art as cultural and ideological phenomena closely linked to the construction of political and dynastic identity.
